Planet lesson

Jupiter

Gas giant

Jupiter is the biggest planet. It is a gas giant with colorful cloud bands and many moons.

Kid fact

More than 1,000 Earths could fit inside Jupiter.

Temperature

-110 C cloud tops

Storm world

Jupiter's Great Red Spot is a huge storm that has lasted for a very long time. It is wider than Earth.

Gas giant

Jupiter does not have a solid surface like Earth. It is mostly hydrogen and helium, with deeper layers under crushing pressure.

Many moons

Jupiter has dozens of moons. Four large ones, Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, were first seen by Galileo in 1610.

Solar system shield

Jupiter's powerful gravity shapes the paths of many small objects. Scientists study it to understand how giant planets affect a solar system.

Look closely

Find the striped cloud belts and the Great Red Spot. Then compare Jupiter with Earth to imagine its enormous size.
